Electrosurgery/Radiosurgery

Electrosurgeryand radiosurgery are advanced surgical techniques used in veterinary medicine to perform various surgical procedures. Both methods involve the use of electricity to cut, coagulate (close blood vessels) and remove tissue.

Electrosurgery: Electrosurgery uses electric current to cut and coagulate tissue. The technique uses a special electrode that creates a high temperature during the flow of the current, allowing tissue to be cut and blood vessels to be closed at the same time, reducing bleeding. In the coagulation stage, the electrode is applied to the tissue, so that the blood vessels are coagulated and closed, helping to prevent bleeding.

Radiosurgery: Radiosurgery, also known as radiofrequency electrosurgery, is an advanced form of electrosurgery that uses high-frequency radio waves. Compared to traditional electrosurgery, radiosurgery offers more precise cutting and heat control, which minimizes damage around the tissue being cut. Procedures performed with radiosurgery are characterized by faster healing, less blood loss and minimal damage to healthy tissue.

Applications of electrosurgery and radiosurgery in veterinary medicine:

• Reducing the time of surgical procedures: These techniques allow various surgical procedures to be performed more quickly and precisely.
• Reducing the risk of bleeding: Coagulation of tissue during incision minimizes the risk of bleeding, which contributes to improved surgical outcomes and reduced recovery time.
• Precise removal of tumors and skin lesions: Electrosurgery and radiosurgery are used to remove tumors, warts, or other skin lesions in animals.
• Laparoscopic procedures: These techniques are also used in laparoscopy, which allows minimally invasive surgeries to be performed in the animal's abdominal cavity.

It is important that electrosurgery and radiosurgery be performed with the proper equipment and experience of the veterinary surgeon to guarantee patient safety and achieve the best surgical results.
