Cushing's Syndrome

Cushing's syndrome, also known as Cushing's syndrome in horses, is a medical condition that occurs in horses as a result of an endocrine disorder. Officially called pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), it is a condition in which the equine pituitary gland produces excess hormones, particularly melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH). The excess hormones lead to a number of symptoms and related health problems.

Symptoms and features of Cushing's Syndrome in horses may include:

  1. Long, curly coat: A characteristic symptom is difficulty in normal coat shedding, leading to elongation and curling, especially in the neck, tail and belly areas.
  2. Increased susceptibility to skin infections: Excess hormones can weaken the skin's immune system, which can lead to recurrent skin infections and hard-to-heal wounds.
  3. Obesity: Horses with Cushing's Syndrome are prone to being overweight and obese, especially in the abdominal area.
  4. Increased sweating: Increased sweat gland activity can lead to excessive sweating.
  5. Slow wound healing: Slow wound healing is a common symptom in horses with this condition.
  6. Ascites: Water retention can lead to abdominal swelling.
  7. Loss of muscle mass: Muscle weakness and loss of muscle mass are also possible.
  8. Hormonal problems: In addition to physical symptoms, horses may also exhibit hormonal abnormalities, such as irregular heat in mares.

Diagnosis of Cushing's Syndrome in horses is based on evaluation of clinical signs, hormonal tests and imaging studies. Although Cushing's Syndrome has no treatment, symptoms can be managed through appropriate veterinary care, dietary changes, the use of anti-hormonal medications and/or supplements. Early diagnosis and coordinated care are key to ensuring the best possible quality of life for horses affected by this condition. It is important to work together with your veterinarian to develop a plan to treat and manage the symptoms of Cushing's Syndrome in horses.
